The concept of the performance was developed during the period of my research grant, supported by Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media within the program NEUSTART KULTUR
index (mimicry) uses text fragments about plants and nature written by scientists, philosophers, and artists. The audience is invited to write, produce and add new labels to the existing ones in the wintery flower beds of the Botanical Garden. These new little signs mimic the botanical ones: How is the perception of our surroundings shaped by attaching words and other context?
Only a plant with a proven line of origin can be part of botanical
collections. Every single handling of a plant gets written down and stored in a database. If there is the slightest doubt
regarding the name and origin of a plant, it gets eradicated. It becomes compost. Therefore, labels are so important. Sometimes they are more visible than the plant itself.
